A look over her shoulder, thousand yards of quiet thought.
Summer Swim | watercolor
Dappled shade, cool water, hot sun. A summer afternoon, timeless, caught in the breeze on sweaty skin.

Sweet children, in many moods.
A painting to me is primarily a verb, not a noun, an event first and only secondarily an image.

Dorothy Newell, 1915
Dorothy Newell was an actress and a suffragette activist. November 6, 1915 she and others took part in a show of support for voting rights for women. Dorothy painted “VOTES FOR WOMEN” on her back.
I took some liberties with this watercolor portrait, not including the most salient message (lettering was not the exercise I focused on at the time), and colorizing her.
